Vigil for ISSI

(Rain date - Sun 1/24, same time)

2538 Channing Way

(between Bowditch and Telegraph, in the plaza between ISSI and Martinez Commons)

We will gather to create an altar to our family, social movement, and academic ancestors and have brief remarks about the need to save ISSI to help the university move towards a more just future.

Join us for a peaceful, family-friendly, physically-distanced protest; we will adhere to all city, county, and state public health regulations. Please:

  • Wear a mask

  • Stay at least six feet away from people who are not part of your household

Please register here so we know how many people to expect.

Featuring the Vigil Danza Mexica from In Xochitl In Cuicatl and Teokalli in support of the existence and resistance of ISSI.

Around 4pm we will walk a few blocks to California Hall to symbolically present the petition to the university administration.

If you would like, please bring:

  • Something to place on the altar, like an offering or a photo. You can pick up your item after the event, but don’t leave anything valuable or irreplaceable!

  • A sign, expressing your wishes for social justice futures at Cal or beyond

  • A battery-powered "candle" (we'll have some too)

Can’t attend? Please join our virtual protest at the same time so we can all make some noise on social media - sign up for that here.

Restrooms:

We are not allowed to use our building (due to public health guidelines), so those restrooms will not be open. There are public restrooms in People’s Park, one block away, or else you can ask in one of the nearby cafes or restaurants (many of them are open for take-out).
